31-5A Notebook: PSJA North's Bush gets win No. 250

HARLINGEN — PSJA North's win against PSJA last week meant just a little more to Bruce Bush than the other nine this season.

Just a little.

The Raiders' 21-20 win against the Bears at PSJA Stadium was also Bush's 250th career win.

Bush spent two years as head coach of the Bears from 1981-82. He said reaching this milestone against one of his many old teams was special.

Bush was 19-3 in two yeas at the San Juan school.

"I got some of my early wins with the Bears," Bush said. "I told the kids this win was symbolic and special."

Hampton, Jaguars close strong with win at PSJA Memorial

PHARR — Edinburg Economedes junior receiver Nelson Hampton showed every bit of versatility coach Oscar Salinas says he has on Thursday night as he caught, rushed and passed for touchdowns to lead the Jaguars to a 42-21 victory.

Hampton rushed 10 times for 103 yards, caught six passes for 72 yards and threw for a 57-yard score. In addition he had two big returns that set up two touchdowns.

City rivals Edinburg High, Edinburg North on same page

EDINBURG — For city rivals, Edinburg High and Edinburg North couldn’t be more mirror images of each other heading into the final week of the regular season.

Both teams clinched District 31-5A’s final two playoff berths last week, entering the postseason together for the first time since 2001. Both stand at 4-2 in the district standings with losses coming against Harlingen High and PSJA North. And both reached significant feats this season for its respective communities.

31-5A Notebook: Caceres leads Bobcats back into playoffs

Joey Caceres and the Edinburg Bobcats can now move on.

Only a couple of years removed from a 0-10 season, the Bobcats clinched their first postseason berth on Friday with a 50-7 win against Harlingen South.

It's the first playoff appearance for Caceres as the Bobcats head coach. As an assistant under the late Robert Vela, Caceres was a regular in the postseason party.

Caceres said getting in as the head coach feels wonderful.
