AREA ROUND GAME DAY PREP MATERIAL

Bi-district round rough on District 32-5A

District 32-5A went one and done in the bi-district round of the playoffs, ending their 2009 seasons. All the four schools can do now is reflect and prepare for the future.

Hanna, Pace, Los Fresnos and San Benito exited the state postseason earlier than any of the quartet wanted, especially for a team like the Falcons that isn’t used to such an abrupt fall.

The past three seasons, Los Fresnos had reached the third round of the playoffs and also claimed the 32-5A title. History did not repeat this season, which ended with a 60-27 loss to Edinburg North.

Pace hopes to upset PSJA North

PHARR — Rene Medrano and the rest of the Brownsville Pace Vikings are pretty excited right about now.

Pace is getting ready for its third straight postseason appearance when the Vikes travel to Pharr to battle the PSJA North Raiders.

The Raiders host Pace in a Class 5A, Division II bi-district affair. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

But for Medrano it's more than just another playoff game.

It's added legitimacy to a legacy the Vikings have been working on since Medrano arrived in the Brownsville school 12 years ago.

32-5A Notebook: Rey steps up for Golden Eagles

Before the 2009 season, junior quarterback Randy Rey hadn’t seen the field much on junior varsity and never taken a varsity snap.

Once senior Tito Perez went down with an ACL injury Sept. 10 against Harlingen South, the young gunslinger was thrown into the fire. He completed only 1 of 3 passes that game, and since then he has matured into one of the better quarterbacks in the district.

He owns a 59.1 percent completion percentage (65-of-110) along with 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions, not to mention the 1,239 yards passing in only eight games

Vikings can credit offensive line for return to 5A playoffs

The Pace offensive line’s development has paralleled the Vikings’ success this season in qualifying for the Class 5A state playoffs a third straight year.

Pace’s O-line was somewhat of a question mark coming into the season as four starters had graduated and senior center Mike Iracheta (5-foot-7, 245 pounds) was the lone holdover.

The Vikings (7-3, 5-2 District 32-5A) take on PSJA North (9-1, 6-1 District 31-5A) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr in the 5A Division II bi-district playoffs.

Hanna beats Pace, claims first outright crown since 1969

It’s official. The Hanna Golden Eagles can hang up a 2009 banner that says District 32-5A champions.

For the first time since 1969, the Golden Eagles claimed a district championship as the offensive and defensive lines led the way in Hanna’s 28-7victory over archrival Pace on Thursday night in front of a sellout crowd at Sams Stadium.

"It feels so great," sophomore quarterback Randy Rey said about winning the 32-5A title. "I just want to thank the offensive line, defense, running backs and the crowd for all the support."

Rivals Hanna, Pace collide for 32-5A title

Of the five Brownsville schools, Hanna and Pace own the most heated and bitter rivalry in the city.

Mix in a district title and city championship, and there is enough elements to make an action-packed movie. That drama will unfold as the Golden Eagles collide with the Vikings in the regular-season finale on Thursday night at Sams Stadium.

Ubaldo Encinia is true defensive playmaker for Pace Vikings

Ubaldo Encinia has become a force as a sophomore nose tackle for the Brownsville Pace Vikings.

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound Encinia was a key contributor on defense in the helping the Vikings (7-2, 5-1 District 32-5A) record a 33-28 victory over San Benito on Saturday to set up Thursday’s 7 p.m. showdown against Hanna (8-1, 6-0) at Sams Memorial Stadium with the 32-5A title at stake. It’s The Brownsville Herald’s Game of the Week.
