Expect another competitive 31-5A

District 31-5A is home to some of the more historic programs in Valley history.
The eight-team league includes the Harlingen Cardinals, PSJA Bears and Edinburg Bobcats.
Others like PSJA North haven't been around as long but the Raiders have established a nice tradition of winning in Pharr in the past decade or so.
Three of the aforementioned squads made the playoffs in 2008. Harlingen and PSJA North won a co-district championship.
The Bears beat the Raiders and Harlingen squeaked by the Bears.
Edinburg North was the fourth playoff team, which beat PSJA. Read more

E-E to lead pack in 2009

District 32-4A has been one of the most predictable in the Rio Grande Valley. Every season, teams say they are going to challenge the dynastic Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets. But just as predictable as those challenges is the inevitable failure to match up with the six-time champions.

In 2009, though, the ‘Jackets aren't the team which returns the most talent. That would be Mission High. However, the Eagles don't have a coach, like Mission Veterans Memorial and Valley View. Even with three coaching vacancies, it's possible to predict how this district will look next season. Read more

32-3A Analysis: Looking at the district in 2009

In arguably the toughest top-to-bottom district in the Rio Grande Valley, District 32-3A provided plenty of drama and excitement in 2008. So much, in fact, that it may be tough for an encore.

But that doesn't mean it can't happen.

With a good number of teams returning plenty of talent, look for the Valley's 3A league to be tough once again in 2009. There will be at least one new face on the sidelines next season. Jorge Peña resigned at Hidalgo to create the league's only coaching opening thus far. Read more

Valley's sub-3As excited for future

It's never too early too look at next football season.

And in the Valley's sub-3A schools, they're as focused as ever on 2009.

Santa Rosa will begin Year Three of the Joshua Gonzalez era with some good talent back for the Warriors' run at a 32-2A crown.

The Warriors bring back good returnees at several skill positions and should be in the thick of a predicted-tough district race.

In Class A, La Villa, the district champ, and Santa Maria, which made its first-ever playoff appearance, are primed and ready to do it again in '09. Read more

Texas Championship Roundup: Allen wins Class 5A Division I championship

HOUSTON - Tucker Carter completed 20 of 29 for 253 yards and three touchdowns, all three in the second half, as Allen rallied to a 21-14 victory over Fort Bend Hightower in the Class 5A Division I state championship game Saturday night.

It was Allen's first state championship. The Eagles finished 15-1 while Hightower, also playing in its first state title game, finished 13-1.

The Eagles went on a nine-play, 71-yard drive with Jeremiah Williams catching a 3-yard touchdown to tie it at 7-7 with 2:59 left in the third quarter. Read more

NINO DIDN'T DISAPPOINT

Erik Niño still feels the disappointment. He still remembers the feeling of walking off the field after Edcouch-Elsa's area-round loss to Port Lavaca Calhoun, knowing that the expectations placed on him and his 'Jackets weren't going to be reached.

For Niño and his teammates, not advancing deep into the postseason was a bitter disappointment, especially since they had talked openly of making history and establishing themselves as a state-wide power.

That Niño couldn't lead E-E to a state championship was about the only way he disappointed this season. Read more

BLOG: "Different Direction" was needed for Mission football

Tom Lee and Carlos Longoria got the ax Wednesday night.

I'm not saying I wish for anybody to be out of a job --- and I'm sure these two guys will bounce back --- but the Mission programs just haven't been cutting it. Of the two, Mission High needed the change the most.
