SAN ANTONIO — There was nothing mythical about these Unicorns.

They were all too real and they were good.

New Braunfels tallied an amazing 558 yards of offense and the defense forced four PSJA North turnovers as the Unicorns galloped to a 62-21 win in a Class 5A, Division II regional game at the Alamodome on Friday.

"These guys area really a bunch of overachievers," Raiders veteran head coach Bruce Bush said. "In the spring we were more concerned with just winning a game but these guys cam together as a team and gelled. This is an 11-2 team and I’m proud of what they accomplished."

At least through halftime, the Raiders (11-2) looked like they might continue to overachieve.

Pharr North made it 20-14 with 2:44 left in the first half on a trick pass play from Leo Garza to QB Noe Garcia on a fourth-and-goal from the 12-yard line.

On the same drive, fullback J.J. Rodriguez picked up 18 yards on a fake punt facing a fourth-and-3.

So the Raiders were moving the ball effectively on the Unicorns and looked as if momentum had shifted Pharr’s way.

But the very athletic John Simmons quarterbacked New Braunfels (10-3) to a score just before the half ended giving the Unis a 27-14 lead at halftime.

Not all bad because the Raiders would get the ball in the third quarter.

But oh what a third quarter it turned out to be for the Raiders.

Or should we say, for the Unicorns.

NB scored 21 points in the third en route to a 35-point second half to run away with the win.

On the second play from scrimmage in the second half, North’s Justin Luna fumbled on the Unicorns’ 30 yard line giving NB prime field position.

New Braunfels scored almost immediately on a Jeremy Garcia 20-yard run.

Down 34-14, the Raiders were forced to punt and New Braunfels took over on its own 20.

A 47-yard pass play from Simmons to Ross Johnson highlighted a five-play, 80 yard drive that ended with Karimu Osman scoring on a nine-yard run to make it 41-14.

PSJA North’s next drive ended with Garcia’s second interception of the night.

After the offering, New Braunfels went the other way to on a two-yard run by backup Kevin Monreal.

The proverbial route was on.

""We’re getting better every week," Unicorns head coach chuck Caniford said. "And you have to get better if you want to win in the playoffs. Our offensive line played fantastic and John was great too."

Simmons paced the Unicorns with 104 rushing yards and one TD on seven carries. He also passed for 176 yards and one TD completing 11-of-16 passes.

The tough-to-bring-down Garcia rushed for 92 yards and three TDs on 11 carries.

Osman added three TDs and 103 yards on only three carries.

He broke free for an 88-yard run with 8:08 left in the game.

For North, Garcia finished with 67 yards rushing and one TD on 11 carries. Rodriguez, who’d rushed for 1,478 yards and 32 TDs coming in, tallied 88 yards and no score.

"We didn’t look to good at time but sometimes good football teams will do that to you," Bush said.
